Hannah McGuire Memorial Cup to be held between Talbot and Clunes
Two Victorian country football/netball clubs, impacted by last year’s tragic death of Hannah McGuire, will this weekend play for a cup named in her honour.
Two country football/netball clubs have struck a memorial trophy in honour of alleged murder victim Hannah McGuire.
Clunes Football Netball Club, in the Central Highlands League, and Talbot Football Netball Club, in the Maryborough Castlemaine league, will come together this weekend to honour Hannah’s life in a pre-season contest.
All football and netball teams will play against each other at Clunes with the winner of the A-grade netball match to receive the first Hannah McGuire Memorial Cup.
A minute’s silence will also be held.
Hannah, 23, died in April last year and her body was found in a burnt out car in Scarsdale, near Ballarat.
Her ex-boyfriend, Lachlan Young, has been charged and is waiting for a trial for her alleged murder.
Mr Young has pleaded not guilty to Hannah’s alleged murder.
Hannah was due to play netball for Clunes last year before her death and spent her last few hours at the club training and enjoying the company of friends and family.
She had previously played for Talbot where her father and brother have played.
Clunes president Andrew Stinchcombe said both teams in previous years played a practice match against each other.
So with McGuire and her family a major part of both clubs it made sense for a tribute match to happen.
“There’s good connections between the two clubs,” Stinchcombe said.
“We didn’t have (a match last year) with them.
“We had our practice match prior to the start of the season before it happened.
“The (A-grade) girls thought it would be fitting so now the opportunity has arisen to pay our respects.”
Stinchcombe said it was likely this match would become an annual match between the two clubs in honour in McGuire.
The games start at 9am on Saturday.
