Emu Valley CA: Kyle Humphrys hits stunning century for California Gully
A central Victorian cricket club got more than it bargained for when its marquee cricketer hit a stunning century which had him leading the country this week. He reveals how it happened.
Kyle Humphrys will always have a story to tell after his brilliant innings on Tuesday night.
The California Gully opening batter and marquee player plundered a brutal 162 runs off 74 balls in his side’s 32-run win over West Bendigo in the Emu Valley T20 competition.
His innings included 11 boundaries and 15 6s.
Humphrys is the Cobras’ guest player for the tournament, usually representing Golden Square in the Bendigo District Cricket Association.
The onslaught started in the first over, scoring 17 runs, and ended with a 20-run final over.
Along the way he hit 25 runs, including two sixes, in the 10th over before adding 23 in the 14th over with three maximums.
His 162 helped the team to 3-258 and was the highest score of any batter in Australia who played on Tuesday.
West Bendigo made 8-226 in reply with Ashley Gray (113 off 48) making a century of his own.
“All I wanted to do really was hit it as straight as I can and as hard as I can,” Humphrys said.
“After 30 runs I thought I would get a big one.
“After an hour and a half I walked off with 162.”
Coming in as a marquee batter, Humphrys knew his role to make an impact.
It was his highest score in Australia, having bettered it previously during an overseas experience.
“We needed a big score so I needed to go through right to the end,” he said.
“I just had to make sure I was there at the end with a big score.”
It was a great night for the team with Humphrys celebrating his first win at the club after also playing for the Cobras last season.
He now averages 151 with the bat for the team in T20s and hopes to take the form back with him to Golden Square this week.
“I’ve probably been a bit flat up until now,” he said.
“Hopefully it kick starts some stuff and I can take it into Saturday.”
