East Gippsland: Wy Yung seals minor premiership with victory over Orbost-Snowy Rovers

Footy finals are just around the corner and Wy Yung is well placed in the East Gippsland league. Read about its latest win.

Wy Yung survived a testing late season assignment against Orbost-Snowy Rovers to win by 19 points and guarantee a top spot finish in the East Gippsland league.

The Tigers made the most of first use of a strong breeze to lead by 18 points at quarter time.

But Orbost-Snowy Rovers had an even more productive time with the assistance of the wind to kick six goals to two to go into halftime holding an eight-point advantage.

In a tight third quarter, Wy Yung regained the lead midway through the third term from a Brad Daniel goal that was followed up by a clever snap from Aaron Hanerua to give it an eight-point lead at the last change.

Brodie Anderson, who finished with three goals, gave Wy Yung the ideal start to the final term when he ran into an open goal.

But Orbost-Snowy Rovers stayed in touch with the efforts of defender Jordan Ross, ruckman Wes Russell and the straight kicking of Hamish Nettleton, who finished with five goals.

Wy Yung is two matches and percentage clear of second-placed Boisdale-Briagolong with one round remaining.

Seven-time East Gippsland league premiership coach and player Rod Bills took over as Wy Yung coach this season following its grand final loss to Stratford last year.

Even though Orbost-Snowy Rovers has lost its last two matches it should hold onto fourth spot with a last round clash against out of contention Lakes Entrance.

Fifth-placed Lucknow’s three-point loss to Boisdale-Briagolong also played into Orbost-Snowy Rovers’ favour with only match left.
