Dayne Beams to play for Mulwala this season in the Murray league

A club in the state’s north has landed a prized recruit as it chases a third-straight premiership as the ex-AFL man prepares to follow in his father’s footsteps. Here’s what we know.

The task for other Murray league clubs to break Mulwala’s premiership streak just got harder with the Lions signing former AFL player Dayne Beams.

The AFL premiership player has joined the club for the 2024 season, creating another legacy in the history of the Lions and the Beams surname.

His father, Phil, won seven best and fairests for the club during his career at the Lions.

Beams will continue his legacy by wearing the number 24 when he plays for the club this year.

The team is aiming for its third straight flag after winning the past two premierships, including last year against Congupna.

Since retiring in 2020 after 177 games for Collingwood and Brisbane, Beams hasn’t played much, instead focusing on his personal life.

Last year he played for Pearcedale in the Mornington Peninsula league, featuring in 10 games for the Panthers.

Despite being a Queenslander most of his junior life, Mulwala is home in some ways for the 33-year-old.

He was born in Yarrawonga, the cross-border town to Mulwala, and lived in the region until he was four when he moved to Queensland.

His brother Clay Beams, who also played AFL, gave the move his seal of approval saying “this is so good” on the Lions social media page.

More to come.
