Soaked footy grounds meant there were some low scoring affairs
WET, wild and wintry conditions soaked country footy grounds on the weekend.
WET, wild and wintry conditions soaked country footy grounds on the weekend.
But that did not stop Buln Buln registering a win with one of the more bizarre score lines you will see this season.
On 29 occasions across the weekend, senior games in Victorian country leagues registered a final score with 10 goals or fewer as players slipped and slid in mud pits across Victoria.
Buln Buln was one.
The Lyrebirds kicked a single goal against their Ellinbank and District league opponent Koo Wee Rup to sneak home winners, 1.6 (12) to 1.3 (9).
“We had about an inch of rain overnight and it just kept raining through the (under) 16s, reserves and by the seniors it was coming in on a 45-degree angle,” Buln Buln club president Steve Symes said.
In the North Gippsland league two matches — Yarram versus Traralgon Tyers United, and Woodside and District against Sale City — were called off early due to the conditions. There were even fears players were suffering from hypothermia at the Yarram match.
In the Mid Gippsland Football League, Thorpdale chased down Yarragon one point at a time to salvage a draw.
Thorpdale president Kelly Durkin said the side had to kick, rush and scramble home behinds to level the scores at 1.14 (20) to Yarragon’s 3.2 (20) when the final siren sounded
“It was just ball up after ball up, and eventually rushing the ball over the line seemed the only way to score,” Durkin said.
“With about two minutes to play, we levelled things up but neither side couldn’t find that winning point.”
While Thorpdale could not take home all four points, it may have set a club record for the number of beanies sold on match day, according to Durkin, with all the head warmers sold out by quarter-time of the reserves.
On the other side of the state, Simpson could not buy a goal in the Colac and District Football League.
The dual reigning premier was restricted to 10 behinds, going down by 13 points against Alvie.
“At times the wind was so strong that the ball was being blown off the boot before the players could even get the kick away,” Simpson president Ken Wright said.
Elsewhere in the Colac and District league, Birregurra’s 14-game winning streak ended when the Saints suffered their first loss of the season to South Colac in the top-of-the-table clash.
