Former Picola league clubs join Murray Football league

THREE clubs that broke away from the Picola and District Football League have officially joined the Murray Football Netball League.

THREE clubs that broke away from the Picola and District Football League have officially joined the Murray Football Netball League.

At a Murray league special general meeting last night, Tungamah, Katandra and Shepparton East Football Netball clubs were officially welcomed to the league, taking the number of clubs in the league to 15.

Tungamah, Shepparton East and Katandra chose to break away from the Picola and District Football League so they can remain affiliated to AFL Victoria and AFL Goulburn Murray.

A fourth club, Dookie United, chose to join the Kyabram District league.

The Picola and District Football League will this year run independently of AFL Victoria and its local commission, AFL Goulburn Murray, after the league declined to sign an agreement with AFL Goulburn Murray.

Murray league general manager Dale Norman said in a statement today: “It goes without saying that has been a hectic couple of weeks with many sleepless nights. All the existing Murray FL clubs embraced the new clubs expressing sympathy for the angst and stress that the ex PDFNL club executives and volunteers have had to endure.”

“We do not see this as a band aid solution but a long term destination for the new clubs. But to ensure the long term sustainability a collaborative approach is required amongst all football and netball bodies who are party to the league and the region.”

A new fixture was ratified by all clubs at last night’s meeting.
