Cohuna officially apply to join Heathcote District league

A country footy club is seeking a move to a neighbouring competition for the 2024 season as its potential new home could grow by three teams. Here is what we know.

It’s official, the Cohuna Kangaroos will be applying to join the Heathcote District league next year.

The club held a special meeting on Thursday night where 80 per cent of members voted in favour of a change of competition.

The Kangaroos currently plays in the Central Murray league and have done so since 1996 when the club formed following a merger of Cohuna and United Football Clubs.

The vote needed at least 75 per cent approval for the next step in the process to be made.

Cohuna president Rick Easton informed the club’s community of the outcome last night.

“As detailed, the club required at least 75 per cent of the vote in the affirmative to progress with a presentation to the Heathcote and District Football Netball League (HDFNL),” Easton said in a statement.

“I wish to advise, following the vote count from all financial members present (and absent), a vote to pursue a future in the HDFNL received 80 per cent of the vote.

“We will now put a proposal together to present to the HDNFL clubs.

“There is a long way to go yet and we thank you for your support.”

If Cohuna Kangaroos are approved to join the Heathcote District league, the Central Murray league will have a chance to agree or vote against the move.

If they vote against the move, it would leave AFL Central Victoria to make a decision on what happens.

Cohuna is the third club to look to move to the Heathcote District league with Loddon Valley clubs Marong and Maiden Gully YCW already expressing a view to do the same.
