The community spirit of country footy never ceases to amaze.

The United Bright Football Netball Club are just the latest example of showing great sportsmanship off the field.

On Saturday, the senior game between Bright and Milawa was called off in the second quarter when Milawa’s Bryce Mortimer broke his leg which will see him miss the rest of the season.

Instead of waiting for the game to restart, a group of Bright supporters known as the ‘100 Club’ raised $2000 for Mortimer and his family.

The money would usually have been handed out following a draw after a Bright home game.

Milawa treasurer Margie Christensen said the family and club were blown away by the generous gesture.

“It’s unbelievable,” she said.

“We couldn’t be more thankful to the Bright supporters who gave their own money to support someone they might not have even known.”

Christensen, who is also the head trainer at the Demons, said the money would go a long way to helping 29-year-old Mortimer and his family.

She said Mortimer was already the father of a young child with a second one on the way.

Their new home is also currently being built.

“The incident really shocked us all,” Christensen said.

“Bryce has been at the club for almost 10 years and has a lot of family connections here. We’ll be doing everything we can to support him during his recovery.”

The $2000 donation may well just be the starting point of Mortimer’s recovery either.

Such is the close knit nature of the club, people have already been ringing committee members asking what they can do to help Mortimer and his family.

His teammates have also asked for their match payments to be given to him.
