Wonga Station Merino property at Jerilderie listed for sale
One of Australia’s best-known Merino properties — Wonga Station in the Riverina — has hit the market for $14 million-plus.
EXCLUSIVE: ONE of Australia’s best-known Merino properties has hit the market.
The 4495ha Wonga Station at Jerilderie in the NSW Riverina — once home to the famed Wonga Merino stud — has been listed by the Star family with expectations of more than $14 million or more than $3110 a hectare.
The sale is being handled by Danny Thomas of CBRE Agribusiness with expressions of interest closing on November 5.
The property has been predominantly used for Merino breeding and is currently running 5000 ewes and lambs but selling agents say there is scope to increase numbers.
There’s also 285ha of developed irrigation with a further 252ha of land designed and approved with headworks constructed.
Agents said Wonga Station’s productive soil types made it suitable for a wide range of row crops or permanent plantings, with up to 1000ha “highly suited” to permanent plantings.
The Wonga stud was one of Australia’s most significant parent Merino flocks.
Founded in 1937 through the division of the Yoorooga Merino flock, it was run by the Culley family until 1989 when it sold to the neighbouring Taylor family of Pooginook Merino stud.
The stud flock was dispersed in 1996.
