Dame Nellie Melba, actor Jason Statham and jazz trumpeter James Morrison are just three of the thousands of appreciative visitors who have spent time savouring the delights of Yarra Grange over its long history.

Sitting neatly between the Maroondah Highway and Yarra River at Coldstream amid some of the Yarra Valley’s most prominent wineries, the property has been owned by the same family for more than 80 years.

It features an 1870s two-storey Georgian-style homestead, over 1km of river frontage, a private sandy beach and large historic gardens.

Originally an estate of more than 800ha, Yarra Grange was built by pastoral pioneer George Harker and was once home to Victorian Premier Thomas Bent.

Jodie Savage’s grandfather bought the property in the early 1940s.

“He served in World War I and was worried for his family that Melbourne would be bombed, so purchased a place in the country,” Jodie said.

“The farm has always been used for cattle and sheep, apart from a short period where it was leased as a vineyard.

“Much of it was burnt out in the 1962 bushfires, save for the three houses, but the externals of the main homestead have remained totally unchanged – even the interiors have received only cosmetic updating.”

A large-scale livestock operation that one person can manage: that’s what’s on offer with the sale of this four-farm aggregation at Lancaster in the Goulburn Valley, 8km east of Kyabram.

With all four located within an eight-minute drive, the property is one of the largest in the area, stocking 6000 head of cattle annually.

Dan and Amy Jackson purchased the holding four years ago, attracted to its climate, prospects for double-cropping and water availability.

“We’ve focused on soil fertility and laser-grading, boosting the farm’s Shepparton sandy loams with full fertiliser applications including lime, gypsum and cow manure,” Dan said.

“We started with dairy before moving into custom-feeding beef, mostly Wagyus, grazed on dry paddocks with supplementary pellets and hay.

“We run a double-cropping rotation of cereals, vetch and oats followed by corn silage harvested at around 21 tonnes to the hectare dry matter, plus summer crops such as sorghum or millet.

“Overall, we’d produce something like 30 dry tonnes per hectare annually.”

Excellent winter cropping yields have underpinned a cross-border expansion at an 858ha mixed farming property, Windarra, about 35km north of Moama, in the NSW Southern Riverina.

Western District cropping farmer Scott Blurton has owned Windarra for two seasons, helping form a portfolio of about 2000ha north of the Vic-NSW border, which operates alongside his 3600ha at Streatham, about 75km west of Ballarat.

“It was never the plan to sell Windarra. Across the two seasons the yields have been excellent and it has been very easy to manage,” Scott said.

“Yields for winter cereals have reached upwards of five to seven tonnes (a hectare). For canola yields have reached between 2.5 to 3 tonnes (a hectare).”

Initially acquired to provide geographical diversity, Windarra has come to market with Scott seeking to consolidate his home holdings in the Streatham region.

Extensively arable, Windarra has been sown to 842 hectares of barley for this year’s winter crop.
