Purnim grazing and lifestyle property for sale
The Macdonalds have owned this Purnim property, Siberia, for more than 70 years – originally buying the land to run a livestock operation. And it’s now on the market.
PURNIM’S David Macdonald lives in the house his father built.
The Macdonalds have owned the property, Siberia, for more than 70 years with David’s late father, Murdoch, buying the land to run a livestock operation.
Murdoch built the house in the late 1950s and David said the care and quality of the construction meant it was still as good as the day it was built.

That house has three bedrooms, a study, sitting room, dining room, sunroom and a kitchen that opens up to an outdoor shaded living area.
From that outdoor area, it is possible to get glimpses of the garden, which has ben lovingly tended by David and his wife, Jennifer, during the time they have lived at the property.
The garden provides views from all the living areas of the house, and includes large numbers of established trees that have been planted by the Macdonalds over the years.
Siberia was originally much bigger, at a sizeable 260ha, and has gradually had land subdivided off, reducing it to its now smaller size of 48ha.
The land has been leased for the past few years to run beef cattle, but David said in their family’s time, it had run both sheep and cattle.
“We used to run a mob of Romney ewes and first-cross ewes, and put a Poll Dorset ram over them,” he said.
“This is great fattening country between Warrnambool and Mortlake, so it could fatten either sheep or cattle thanks to the large amount of grass it grows.”

David estimated the property at its current size could run up to 500 ewes and lambs or a herd of 60 cows and calves, or fatten 50 or more steers each year.
Siberia is divided into six paddocks and water is provided by two dams, as well as an electric bore, which fills troughs. Rainfall ranges from 700mm-750mm.
Farm improvements include a three-stand shearing shed, stock yards and machinery sheds.
Siberia is about a 20-minute drive from the major regional centre of Warrnambool.
