AN ICONIC home built in 1907 for the first mayor of Berrigan Shire and a prominent pro-Federation activist is the centrepiece of Nangunia, a sprawling mixed farming operation in the southern Riverina region of NSW.
Located 6km from Berrigan and 40km from Mulwala, Nangunia offers fertile soil types, a sound fertiliser history and 1220ha of arable broad-scale land coupled with highly productive grazing country.

MICKLEHAM DAIRY FARM NOW A PROPERTY GOLDMINE
Set in 2ha of irrigated gardens, the double-brick homestead has five bedrooms (though seven or eight would be possible), three bathrooms, parlour, billiards room, butler’s room, wood-burning heater and in-ground, heated swimming.
Period features include wide verandas, polished Murray Pine floorboards, pressed-metal ceilings, 10 fireplaces, tiled foyer and the prominent use of stained glass.
Other improvements include a renovated two-bedroom cottage, quartermaster’s residence, five-stand shearing shed with undercover yards for 500 sheep, large machinery shed, workshop, hay sheds, fertiliser shed and grain storage facilities totalling 6500 tonnes.
The property has been owned by the Steel family for the past nine years.
“Since then we’ve done a lot of fencing in the stock areas, rehabilitated access laneways and renovated pastures with a mix of lucerne, cocksfoot, rye and clovers, as well as general farm maintenance,” Simon Steel said.
“Soils range from red risers to the heavier self-mulching types, with a lot of rice-approved ground.
“Crops we’ve sown have been mainly a rotation of wheat, barley and canola, with rice crops scattered through the years when we’ve had water for them, and lupins in odd years.”
Simon said the country was suitable for both winter and summer crops, with the potential to grow anything from cereals to oilseeds to maize, rice or cotton.
“We have a pressurised stock and domestic water supply through Murray Irrigation, pumped to the homestead and around the property, plus further MIL entitlements and another allowance from the West Corurgan PID (Private Irrigation District) via channels,” Simon said.
