THE income from one agricultural enterprise in Gippsland is far from paltry.

Hard work by Dejvis Pamic has seen the transformation into a hi-tech operation of a business that he admitted was already making good returns.

Mr Pamic is a self-confessed perfectionist, and took the opportunity to buy the Iona-district farm more than 10 years ago, and set about putting his own stamp on the business.

Upgrades in the past five years have included the installation of digital cameras in each shed with audio, allowing Mr Pamic to check how things are going without having to go inside.

“It means that I can listen particularly to the machinery and I can hear if something is blocked or if feed is running out, but I can also hear if things are running smoothly from my office,” he said.

“It has made a world of difference to the way the business can run.”

The property has a permit for 168,800 birds, but is running 134,500 birds under RSPCA guidelines.

Mr Pamic has just started the first section of a five-year by five contract with Turosi, one of

Victoria’s largest chicken-meat processors. This ensures a consistent income stream each month from rearing broiler chickens for meat production, with the contract in its first year.

There are four broiler sheds, which are tunnel ventilated, fully automated and meet the standards of the RSPCA and the chicken processors. Each shed has a range of new equipment including fans and cool room panel for temperature control.

Away from the sheds, improvements include a three-bedroom house, a six-bay machinery shed, another four-bay machinery shed with toilet, a pump shed and a portable site office.

Water for the poultry operation is provided by three dams, with the water filtered and chlorinated before being used. There are also two bores.

Mr Pamic said he was happy to stay on and help new owners learn the ropes and was hoping to pass on advice.

“We have built up an excellent business here and I’d like to know that it keeps up to that standard with the new owners,” he said.
