Brian Grenfell, Renee Grenfell and Matt Quinn purchase Myrtleford Hotel

Three familiar faces in the state’s North East have purchased a notable pub, adding it to their existing hospitality ventures.

Beer prices keep rising and rising

The historic two-storey Myrtleford Hotel has a new set of owners after the building and business was purchased by a North East Victorian family partnership.

Siblings Brian and Renee Grenfell, along with Renee’s husband Matt Quinn have joined forces, purchasing the mighty venue that has history dating back to the 1880s.

Ms Grenfell and Mr Quinn have added the hotel to their existing business, the Myrtleford Bakehouse, located just 80 metres away.

Meanwhile Ms Grenfell’s brother, Brian, has owned and operated Albury hospitality venue, Zed Bar, for about 20 years.

Ms Grenfell, who has lived in Myrtleford for almost a decade, said the family wanted to purchase the pub to keep the space open for locals and tourists.

“Hospitality is great because you get the personal reward of seeing people having a great time,” she said.

“The local community here has a lot of very friendly people and is very country-orientated.

“Tourism to the area has also steadily increased in the last few years with people getting out and realising what a beautiful area it is here.”

The Grenfells and Mr Quinn purchased the pub after previous owner Tim Chapman listed the venue for sale last year.

The pub was expected to field offers between $1 million to $1.25 million after Mr Chapman and his family completed a significant 10-week makeover and revamped the pub’s upstairs accommodation.

It is understood the pub was sold in line with expectations.

Since taking over at the Myrtleford Hotel the partnership has focused on running the accommodation, with kitchen meals served from late February.

McDonald Hospitality Brokers agent Dan McDonald handled the sale and said increasing tourism in Victoria’s North East was making pubs a popular investment in the state’s Alpine region.

The pub has nine accommodation rooms, a public bar and is currently licenced for up to 500 patrons with a function space and beer garden.

Earlier this year the 120-year-old Gellibrand River Hotel was reopened after a Melbourne investment group purchased the property and locals Corrie and Dorthe Koorn took up the lease.
