THERE’S little Mary and Rob Hanna like better than sitting in their enclosed courtyard under a rustling canopy of mature maple trees and greeting their beloved horses as they peer over their stable doors.

Horses have been the couple’s lifelong passion and their luxurious Bellarine Peninsula home showcases their elite sporting achievements.

Mary has represented Australia at five Olympic Games and five World Equestrian Games and been Australian National Grand Prix Champion on six occasions.

She is also a full-time equestrian coach and dressage horse trainer, while Rob was chef d’equipe of the Australian eventing team for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.

Located at Bellarine, 25 minutes from Geelong, the imposing property features a grand homestead, superlative equine facilities, rich black soils and sweeping views over Geelong’s Corio Bay towards the You Yangs.

Mary and Rob have owned the property for the past 15 years.

“When we arrived, there was a solid granite house that had been built by an Italian stonemason, but wasn’t quite finished,” Mary said.

“It had been set into the side of a hill, but we wanted to put in some stables and a courtyard at the back and add an indoor arena, then terrace the front, so it was a very big project to move the back of the hill to the front.”

A sealed, tree-lined private driveway, accessed through remote-control gates, leads directly to the house and outbuildings.

The residence provides four large bedrooms (the master with dressing room and ensuite), three more bathrooms, formal lounge and dining room, informal living areas, kitchen with marble benches and walk-in pantry, sitting room and office.

Other features include plantation shutters throughout, hydronic heating and security system, an expansive cellar, full-house Bose sound system, solar power and saltwater heated pool with spa.

A separate self-contained apartment sits nearby, alongside a bountiful orchard.

Equestrian facilities include a competition-standard indoor arena with overhead computerised irrigation system, 13 stables, an arena viewing area with kitchen and staff accommodation, five-bay shed complex, round yard, working area and breeding crush.

There’s also a hay shed and generous shedding for vehicles and farm machinery.

The three large and 10 smaller paddocks are serviced by laneways and water supply is assured, with mains supply, 280,000 litres in rainwater storage, two spring-fed dams and a bore yielding 10,000 litres an hour.

Before moving to Bellarine, Mary and Rob ran a large stud in Gisborne breeding Warmbloods for dressage and now plan to return there to be closer to family.
