US politics live: Donald Trump’s fresh outburst at Australia

Amid fears of huge sell offs as US markets open, Donald Trump has chosen to take another worrying swipe at Australia.

American stock markets have opened lower again after Asian and European bourses were whacked on Monday due to the reverberations and uncertainty over new tariffs.

The ASX ended the day 4.23 per cent lower with shares in the red across the board.

Peter Dutton has predicted Australia could be facing “a global recession” which would hit superannuation funds.

“If we are to face a recession in the United States, you don’t want a Labor-Greens government in charge in Canberra,” Mr Dutton said,

“That will be a disaster for your retirement plans.”

So far, Mr Trump is sticking to his tariff guns saying it’s the “medicine” the economy needs but, for Americans at least, it will all be worth it.

On Monday, US time, Mr Trump once again took aim at Australia and the fact Aussie beef is sold on Mercian but not the way around.

He also said China as “not acknowledging my warning for abusing countries not to retaliate,” after the nation announced 34 per cent tariffs on the US,

He will meet Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington DC today. Expect the war in Gaza to be the main discussion – but also the 17 per cent tariff Mr Trump pinned on his erstwhile ally.
