US politics live: Trump not happy as Putin ‘agrees’ to truce
Donald Trump has said that Vladimir Putin’s long winded response to his Ukraine ceasefire proposal is “incomplete”.
Welcome to our live coverage of US politics.
Which at least partly, today, will be in Moscow where US officials are meeting with their Russian counterparts to try and get a ceasefire in Ukraine across the line.
But Russia appears to be playing for time.
Vladimir Putin said he “agreed” to the concept of a ceasefire but added there were “nuances” which needed to be “painstakingly” looked into.
That’s is not what Donald Trump wants to hear who responded that although Putin’s response was “promising” chided it for being “incomplete”.
The Kremlin appears to want a full peace plan that would satisfy its demands and fundamentally weaken Ukraine and by extension Europe.
Donald Trump has threatened financial “devastation” for Russia if it doesn’t come to the party.
In Washington, Mr Trump is meeting NATO chief Mark Rutte who will no doubt have views on Ukraine and the various peace plans.
Mr Trump’s tariffs wars are continuing with him taking aim at the European Union.
He has now threatened 200 per cent tariffs on EU alcohol in reaction to what he has called a “nasty 50 per cent tariff” on American whisky.
That was European retaliation for Mr Trump’s 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminium.
Meanwhile, in New York, Trump Tower was occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters with 98 people arrested.
And there are reports Mr Trump has instructed the US military to draw up a plan to “reclaim” the Panama Canal.
Read on for more updates.
