Pedestrian dragged for 1km by alleged drunk driver in China
Horrifying footage has shown a seriously injured woman after she was dragged up to 1km by an alleged drunk driver in China.
Horrifying footage has captured the aftermath of an alleged drunk driver dragging a pedestrian with her car for up to one kilometre down the road after striking them with her car.
The graphic video surfaced online this week following the traumatic incident in Central China’s Hunan Province on Friday at about midnight (local time), Global Times reported.
The 28-year-old driver, with the surname Xiao, reportedly registered a blood-alcohol content reading of 0.13 – more than double the legal limit in Australia.
According to the publication, she continued driving after hitting a 36-year-old woman, with the surname Xie, who had been riding in front of her BMW on an electric bike.
Traffic police eventually pulled Xiao over before proceeding to verbally berate her as she remained in the car, appearing to search for something on her phone.
While being yelled at by officers, the injured woman remained naked, face down on the bitumen with her clothing still trapped in the car that hit her.
Despite the ordeal, the woman survived the incident and was taken to hospital where she is being treated in a stable condition.
The driver, who appeared nonchalant in the disturbing viral clip, was arrested and charged with “causing traffic casualties”, Global Times reported.
Many respondents to the video have argued Xiao should face penalties similar to what would be applied for murder, given she had tried to flee the scene of a crime.
“She knowingly hit this person and fully intended to keep on driving, which she did. Her only regret is not knowing the woman was stuck to the car,” one Reddit comment read.
“Anyone completely disturbed by the fact that she had absolutely no reaction to the fact that she just possibly killed someone?” another wrote.
Others pointed out the bizarre treatment of the victim by police, who placed focus on the alleged drunk driver while Xie laid exposed on the ground.
“So is it normal in this area to just stand around and yell at the criminal, while letting a victim slowly die naked and alone?” one proposed on Reddit.
“The whole thing is weird. Why isn’t she immediately being detained and removed from the vehicle? Why isn’t the person who was hurt moved to safety. Complete lack of awareness and care. Disgusting lack of humanity,” another wrote.
Drivers in China who kill individuals via a hit-and-run can face up to seven years in prison, according to the publication.
