Israeli mum who escaped Hamas with newborn learns that husband is dead on live TV

This is the heartbreaking moment a young mother cradling a newborn is told her husband has been killed during a live interview. Warning: This footage may upset readers.

An Israeli mother found out her missing husband was dead during a live TV interview after he disappeared in the Kfar Aza massacre.

Shaylee Atary and her newborn daughter Shaya escaped after more than 24 hours of hiding in a warehouse with no food or water while Hamas terrorists tried to break into their home.
When she heard the gunmen getting closer again, she ran across the lawn as the terrorists fired at her.

This was the same village where gunmen massacred families, including 40 babies and children, in an attack which has sparked global outrage.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Atary said her husband Yahav Winner had been missing since the kibbutz came under attack from some 70 Hamas terrorists at dawn on Saturday.

Footage – which the family gave permission to be aired – shows Ms Atary clutching her one-month-old newborn as she says her filmmaker husband could be “injured somewhere” or “kidnapped”.

During the interview, Ms Atary then appears to speak to her mother, who has dropped to the floor in the hallway with her head in her hands after receiving a sickening update in a phone call from the Israel Defence Forces.

The young mother repeatedly shouts “Ma, Ma” as her mother stays silent and other family members quickly take the newborn from her hands so she can find out what has happened.

She then starts to wail uncontrollably as relatives gather around her.

Sky’s chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay, who was conducting the interview, said: “This is the horror of war.

“The family has allowed us to show this so that everyone understands what it is like.”

The teen officer was shot in the mouth during the attack by a heavily armed gang who stormed the village of Yakhini in Southern Israel.

She killed three of the gunmen but was fatally wounded when she bravely rushed into a wooden shed where the terrorists were hiding.

The 19-year-old guard had just cut short a family holiday to New York so she could return to Israel and join the fight against Hamas.

“Ravit insisted on going in first. She was killed but she saved the unit, she saved the operation,” Commander Baruch Honig told mourners.

“We were in an olive grove and had been fighting for several hours. We shot eight of them. Ravit killed three.

“We thought they were all dead. We did a sweep of the area and Ravit went to check a shed in the olive grove.

“She insisted on going in first. She asked me to cover her. She was shot. But if she had not gone in there, he would have wiped us all out. She saved the unit.”
These are some of the 900 Israelis killed since Hamas launched its surprise attack on the weekend.

“She told us that she was OK,” Adi Bayder said. But a short while later, she had stopped answering calls.

“A terrorist came home to her, killed her, took her phone, filmed the horror and published it on her Facebook wall. This is how we found out,” Mor Bayder added in another post.
