Tasmania gets ready for holiday snow

TASMANIANS can expect some school holiday snow fun with falls reaching almost to sea level as the result of a cold front approaching from the west.

TASMANIANS can expect some school holiday snow fun with falls reaching almost to sea level as the result of a cold front approaching from the west.

The cold air is due to hit the island state late today, with Tasmanians in many areas likely to see snow when they wake tomorrow, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Brooke Oakley said.

“We are expecting it to settle to around 200 metres with snow flurries to lower levels,” she said.

“And that snow should lift by Wednesday afternoon or evening.” While the state’s south is expected to see most of the snow, Ms Oakley said falls are forecast across the island.

Hobart is expected to reach a maximum of just 8C tomorrow. Flood warnings continue for the state today with a high chance of rain in most parts.

Many rivers and dams in the state’s north are at capacity or still overflowing after heavy rainfall in June and further falls could again mean floods.
