Soggy start to 2020 expected with more than 25mm tipped for parts of Victoria

Parts of Victoria could be in for a soggy start to 2021 with upwards of 25mm of rain forecast for much of the state over the next week.

PARTS of Victoria could be in for a soggy start to 2021 with upwards of 25mm of rain forecast for much of the state over the next week.

In Victoria, the Bureau of Meteorology’s eight-day rainfall outlook points to the biggest totals being recorded in the east of the state with most of the western half expecting more than 15mm. Areas of the northern Mallee can expect more than 10mm.

Areas of NSW, including the New England and Northern Tablelands – which has provided a major platform of support at Victoria’s weaner calf sales in recent decades – are on track to receive more than 50mm and upwards of 100mm in some instances.

In parts of tropical Queensland and the Northern Territory, more than 150mm of rain is forecast in the next week.

The forecast rain follows a fairly dry week across most of Victoria, with the exception being parts of the North East and East Gippsland – some areas of which recorded almost 50mm or two inches on the old scale.

According to the BOM, the best falls in the seven days to 9am yesterday were at Bairnsdale (49mm), Strathbogie (30mm), Euroa (23mm), Lakes Entrance (20mm) and Bruthen (15mm).

In NSW, Tamworth received 106mm for the week, with Wee Waa picking up 97mm, Armidale 82mm, Gunnedah 77mm, and Barraba and Narrabri each recording 68mm. Moree recorded 50mm for the week.

In parched areas of Queensland, Longreach recorded 38mm, Blackall 35mm and Charleville 30mm.
