SNOWFALLS across southern Victoria have stunned a veteran Bureau of Meteorology forecaster.

The bureau’s senior forecaster of 20 years, Richard Carlyon, says a strong cold front saw snowfall at 500m in The Grampians, the Dandenongs and Kinglake area on Wednesday.

“It’s unusual,” he said. “I’ve never seen snowfall at this low level this early in the year before.”

Victoria’s ski fields, including Mount Buller, have also had some snow almost a month ahead of the official start to the season. At Falls Creek, temperatures dipped to -5.1C overnight on Tuesday, the coldest so far this year.

However, warmer weather is expected to make a return at the weekend, with Sunday tipped to reach 19C in metropolitan areas.
