Analysis: Australia’s upcoming weather forecast

Eastern parts of Victoria and the southern Riverina have benefited from one of the best rains of 2025, but the western half of the state has again largely missed out.

Some of the best falls in the past 24 hours, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, have been in the northeast with Eildon recording 71mm and Wangaratta 47.6mm.

Across the border, Albury had 38.4mm and led to the cancellation of the Albury Gold Cup race meeting, and Deniliquin received 34mm.

Richard Sargood, who farms between Howlong and Corowa on the Murray River, said he had a “badly needed” 53mm.

“It will be a break for the season and with a bit of follow up rain in the next couple of weeks it will be just about perfect,” he said.

“It was very dry.

“There was dust everywhere and everyone was getting short of water and short of feed.

“If this kickstarts the season, which it will come close to doing, it will be a godsend.”

The Goulburn Valley also had good falls with Shepparton receiving 26.8mm and Kyabram 22.6mm.

In West Gippsland, which has been unseasonally dry in recent months, Warragul 24.88 after receiving 36mm on Sunday.

Warragul started the year with monthly totals of 10.2mm in January and 32.4mm in February.

“We’re in no means in the situation of western Victoria and other areas that have had it tougher,” livestock agent Anthony Delaney said.

“But it has been unseasonally dry.

“The rain on Sunday and again last night has freshened everything up a little bit.

“It will be good to see it keep coming.”

Further east there were more good falls in East Gippsland with Orbost receiving another 22mm.
