MUCH of Victoria is tipped to receive from 10mm to 30mm of rain in the next week.

Some weather websites are forecasting up to 200mm may fall in the state’s North East.

While the rain may save a watering for irrigators, it would cause worries for grain growers and hay makers.

The bulk of the rain is expected to arrive on Sunday, with more forecast for Wednesday.

Weatherzone senior meteorologist Rob Sharpe said it was a widespread rain event right across Australia.

“Moisture levels have been increasing across the nation due to fairly consistent easterly winds in Queensland,” Mr Sharpe said.

“Moisture will then pick up in the west of the country, helping produce a widespread rain event.

“During the weekend the troughs will combine and deepen in the east, with heavy falls spreading across western Queensland and New South Wales and parts of Victoria.

On Sunday, a low and trough will spread across the west of the nation, before slowly moving east through the working week.

Mr Sharpe said NSW would fare the best, with the entire state likely to see some rain.

The southern and central slopes and ranges are due to see the heaviest falls in the nation: 50-150mm, with isolated heavier weekly totals.

He said Victoria, the southern half of South Australia and the southern districts of Western Australia were are all due to receive widespread rain of 10-30mm, with only isolated pockets getting less.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology today released its climate outlook showing a bleak rain forecast in the lead up to summer.

“November to January is likely to be drier than average across parts of Victoria, NSW, the Pilbara region, and across Cape York.

Wetter than average conditions are favoured across the central and southwestern parts of the country,” the bureau said.

The current outlook reflects a combination of a strong El Niño in the Pacific, a decaying positive Indian Ocean Dipole and very warm Indian Ocean temperatures.
