Perth shivers through cold night as mercury dips below 2C

PERTH shivered through the coldest night of the year with the mercury plunging below 2C in some suburbs.

IT’S not winter yet, but Perth shivered through the coldest night of the year with the mercury plunging below 2C in some suburbs.

While the Bureau of Meteorology predicted a cold night with an expected 5C minimum, the temperature dipped to 1.7C in Jandakot at 5.29am and Pearce, 45km east of the city.

Perth recorded a minimum of 4.4C, which came at 5.44am and Perth Airport was even colder, recording a low of 3C, at 5.35am.

Gingin Airport, 80km northeast of the city, recorded 0.5C at 6.36am.

Meanwhile Rottnest, protected by the ocean affect, had an overnight low of just 13.7C and Swanbourne dropped to 7.8C.

The cold snap came on the back of a cold front which swept across the southern half of the state on Sunday night and Monday, bringing a pool of clear, cold air in its wake with light winds overnight.

In the Great Southern, Wandering, one of WA’s coldest towns, recorded a minimum of 0.5C, just before 6am.

Temperatures were also low in the Central Wheatbelt, with Cunderdin dipping to 1.4C and Southern Cross 2C.

Meanwhile, Perth, after a cold night, can expect a partly cloudy Tuesday, with a top of 20C.
