EARLY sown winter crops have received a boost with parts of Victoria’s major grain growing regions recording more than 40mm of rain over the weekend.

The rain arrived on time — Anzac Day is the traditional start date for most winter cropping programs in southeast Australia — and ahead of budget, following a widespread autumn break across most regions earlier this month.

More rain is forecast this week with parts of Victoria’s North East and southern NSW in line for more than 100mm.

The best falls over the weekend were in the Wimmera and Mallee with Donald picking up 41mm, followed by Birchip (39mm), Woomelang (38mm), Warracknabeal (34mm), Murrayville (32mm) and Nhill (31mm). Jeparit recorded 27mm, Longerenong and Ultima each recorded 24mm and Horsham (22mm).

In northern Victoria, the best falls were at Charlton (38mm), Korong Vale (32mm), Kerang (26mm), Bendigo (25mm), Dunolly (24mm), and Echuca, Kyabram and Strathfieldsaye (23mm) while Strathbogie topped the readings in the North East with 27mm, ahead of Wrightley (26mm) and Mitta Mitta (23mm).
