SOUTHEAST Australia is in for a scorcher with the mercury forecast to hit 45C tomorrow.

But experts say the searing heat will last less than 24 hours, with a cool change and showers expected tomorrow night.

The high temperatures — more than 12C above average for this time of year — will be concentrated on the NSW Riverina and northwest Victoria.

In the Riverina, a top of 46C is expected at Ivanhoe, with Balranald, Hay and Hillston all forecast to reach 45C, and Deniliquin, Griffith and Narrandera 44C.

Most of Victoria will also be blanketed by 40C-plus heat. Kerang, Mildura, Ouyen and Swan Hill are forecast to hit 44C.

Echuca, Horsham, Shepparton and Wangaratta are tipped to reach 42C.

The rare exception will be Gippsland, with Bairnsdale and Sale going for tops of 35C.
