Washed out: Satellite images show before and after impact of floods on farmers

The vast impact of the southern NSW and Victorian floods has been revealed in satellite images taken before and after the floods.

Thousands of Shepparton homes inundated

Satellite images taken before and after northern Victoria’s floods have captured the vast extent of inundation, as water poured across the Loddon, Campaspe and Goulburn River floodplains.

Applying special filters to Sentinel satellite images highlights where water has pooled in thousands of paddocks or spilt out of rivers and on to farms.

A patchwork of dark blue covers the land either side of the Campaspe River, from Rochester to Echuca, as well as land adjoining a myriad of creeks to the east.

Use your mouse or finger to slide the image from left to right and back to compare the images taken on October 2 to those on Monday October 17, after floods swept through the region.

Over on the wide flat Loddon River floodplain, huge sheets of water can be seen upstream of Kerang, where they are likely to sit for days, if not weeks.

In Shepparton the Goulburn River has quickly spread out onto its floodplain, inundating low-lying homes in Mooroopna and Kialla, where Emergency Management Victoria has been urging residents to evacuate their homes.
