Visionary in southern agriculture dies, aged 88
Gordon Paterson, famous for his property Hells Gate at Balranald, NSW, has died, aged 88.
The agricultural world has lost one of its giants with the death of Gordon Paterson on Sunday.
Mr Paterson was best known for his property Hells Gate between Hay and Balranald, yet his agricultural interests were not limited to the one station nor just to land.
He was a strong supporter across many fields of agriculture, including buying permanent water rights, running cattle and operating a feedlot.
At the time of his passing, he farmed 65,000 hectares in the Riverina and another 10,200 hectares in the Western District, making him one of Victoria’s major landholders.
The Riverina holdings include Pevensey Station, Chillagoe, Glenmea, Berawinnia, Dales and Loorica while the Western District properties include Clifton, Iramoo, Glenlivett, Vermont and Kurrumbee.
Grandson James Paterson, who now runs the family company JHW Paterson and Son, said his grandfather was a visionary.
Mr Paterson, who was 88, is survived by his wife of 65 years, Verna.
