Winter rainfall forecast: Eastern Australia to receive above-average rain

Significantly above-average rainfall is forecast for most of eastern Australia over the next few months, according to the latest BOM report.

Much of the eastern mainland of Australia can expect to receive above-average rainfall over the next few months.

Much of eastern Australia is on track for a wetter-than-average next three months, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

In its three-month forecast released last week, the BOM said much of the eastern two thirds of Australia’s mainland could expect above average rain for August to October. Most of NSW and northern Victoria are rated an 80 per cent-plus chance of exceeding average rainfall totals.

Daytime temperatures are also expected to be above-average in the northern tropics and western and southern parts of the continent.

The BOM said with large parts of the eastern Indian Ocean warmer-than-average, climate influencers include an emerging negative Indian Ocean Dipole.

A negative IOD increases the chances of above average winter-spring rainfall for parts of southern Australia.

There was good rain in parts of Victoria in the past week, with the North East, western Victoria and the Wimmera faring the best.

In the North East, Cheshunt picked up 110mm in the seven days to 9am yesterday while Violet Town recorded 101mm, Warrenbayne 95mm, Lake Dartmouth 87mm and Greta South 85mm. In western Victoria, Portland recorded 77mm, Casterton 58mm, Dartmoor 56mm, Nullawarre 43mm and Coleraine 42mm.

The best falls in the Mallee and Wimmera were at Natimuk and Stawell (41mm), Kanagulk (33mm), Edenhope and Ultima (32mm), Murrayville and Sea Lake (26mm) and Annuello (25mm).
