Wedge-tailed eagle deaths: Insecticide found in carcasses at Violet Town

An agricultural chemical has been detected in Wedge-tailed eagle carcasses after more than 150 protected native birds were found dead at a property near Violet Town.

AN agricultural chemical is believed to have killed nearly 100 Wedge-tailed eagles at a property near Violet Town.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning officers and Victoria Police executed a search warrant at the sheep and cattle property in August after dead native birds were found in the area.

The chemical, which is registered for the control of mites, was detected in six Wedge-tailed eagle carcasses sent off for testing.

“Samples were also taken from carcasses of animals suspected of being used as bait and have also tested positive for the same chemical,” acting program manager compliance operations Andrew Dean said.

“More line searches have also been conducted near Violet Town last week and an additional 47 native birds, including 25 Wedge-tailed eagles, have been found, bringing the total number to almost 200.

“It remains unclear if these birds were deliberately poisoned, however given the large number of birds found nearby, it’s a possibility.

“All evidence collected will be forensically analysed, including the carcasses and chemicals seized, which may take some time”.

A further two search warrants were executed at properties in Shepparton East and Goomalibee during late September, as part of the investigation.

The discoveries come after the deaths of more than 400 Wedge-tailed eagles in East Gippsland last year.

All native birds are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and deliberately killing them carries a maximum penalty ranging from $8261 to $39,652 and/or six to 24 months’ imprisonment.
