Working both as an electrician and small business owner, Joey Zakkour often gets asked the same question about being a volunteer firefighter.

“People say the same thing: ‘How do you find the time?’ The answer is, it’s not that hard — I make the time,” the 31-year old said.

Originally from Melbourne, Mr Zakkour opted for a tree-change a few years ago and moved to Broadford. Wanting to make connections in the community, he decided the best way was to join the CFA.

“It’s not just about fighting fires. There’s all these other things you get involved in with the CFA,” Mr Zakkour said. “Plus it’s a good way to meet new people and help out.”

As part of National Volunteer Week, the CFA is calling for more Victorians to sign up to the statewide firefighting force.

Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said more than 52,000 volunteers form part of the statewide organisation with new recruits more than welcome.

He encouraged anyone interested to check out the CFA website or visit their local station.

Our organisation is unique in offering volunteers the opportunity to gain leadership skills, training and experience while serving their communities. It’s also a great place to meet and work with people from all walks of life,” Mr Cook said.

“We are looking to recruit from all of the community to ensure CFA brigades are truly reflective of the communities they serve and protect.”
