PARTS of Victoria are on flood watch with a deepening low-pressure trough expected to cross the state tomorrow delivering up to 90mm of rain.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the flood watch is for North Central catchments from the Avoca River to the Broken River with minor flooding potentially developing from tomorrow afternoon.

Expected affected catchments include the Broken River, Broken Creek, Seven and Castle creeks, Goulburn River upstream of Lake Eildon, Goulburn River from Eildon and Seymour, the Goulburn River downstream of Seymour, and the Campaspe, Loddon and Avoca rivers.

The flood watch follows a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall issued for Victoria’s Northern Country, North Central and parts of Central, Mallee, North East and Wimmera districts.

According to the BOM, rain is expected to develop in western Victoria in the early hours of tomorrow and extend eastwards during the morning. Widespread totals of 30-60mm are expected in the warning area during the day with isolated heavier falls of 80-90mm possible.

The heaviest falls are more likely to be experienced with thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Rain will tend to showers and thunderstorms during Friday evening before easing early Saturday. The BOM said the likes of Bendigo, Shepparton, Swan Hill, Seymour, Maryborough, Wodonga and Wangaratta would likely be among the affected districts.

Meanwhile, stone-fruit growers in the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland districts, as well as parts of the North East, have been warned that rain and accompanying high humidity today and tomorrow are conducive to a heavy outbreak of brown rot.

The BOM has also issued a brown-rot warning for parts of East Gippsland over the next few days.
