From Minyip to Thoona, a series of popular country drinking holes have hit the market. See which pubs are for sale right now.
Pubs, clubs and hotels are the lifeblood of any Victorian town with many standing since before Australia’s Federation.
With a series of eye-catching pubs on the market across the state, The Weekly Timeshas found the picks of the bunch.
THE CLUB HOTEL, MINYIP
Price guide: $260,000 (indicative price guide)
The Club Hotel in Minyip has been standing since 1907 and is steeped in history.
The famous pub was a renowned establishment in the Wimmera town and was used as part of the The Flying Doctors television series between 1986 and 1993.
The Club Hotel has also been an attraction for tourists with audiences still flocking to Minyip to see the pub.
More recently, it was also selected as a location for the filming of the The Dry, starring Eric Bana in 2019.
The Club Hotel has not been open for about seven years, but locals are hoping that might change soon.
Ray White Ballarat selling agent Jason Todd said early interest in the pub had been strong.
“The town wants to see the hotel reopen and they are pretty excited and waiting with anticipation to see what is done with the property,” he said.
“We are very hopeful we can find a buyer who has a purpose for it here and now.”
The hotel has more than 40 rooms, spread over two levels and remains relatively unchanged since its original construction.
ECHUCA HOTEL, ECHUCA
Price guide: about $11 million
After 20 years in the hospitality game, a local Echuca family is selling their beloved pub.
The Echuca Hotel is for sale after the family spent the past two decades crafting an eye-catching venue with multiple bars, modern bistro, a variety of outdoor spaces and accommodation suites.
The hotel is located at High St, Echuca, within the historic Port of Echuca precinct, a major hotspot for tourists and locals.
THE BOWER TAVERN, COHUNA
Price guide: $1.195 million
In northern Victoria, one of Cohuna’s two hotels is on the market.
The Bower Tavern has traded as such since 1989 with current tenants, the Williams family, running the pub since August 2019.
The business is not for sale, but the building, which has been open since 1927 is for sale.
The Bower was first an open-air movie picture theatre before running as a hosiery mill, electrical shop and Jockas takeaway throughout the years.
The Bower Tavern has a bar and bistro room and also has an upstairs function room.
CUMBERLAND HOTEL, SMEATON
Price guide: $650,000 freehold going concern or $120,000 lease
Amanda Bomphrey and her family have been in charge of the Cumberland Hotel for about 11 years, but they have decided now is the time to sell.
The country pub, located 15 minutes from Daylesford and 25 minutes from Ballarat, was reopened by the Bomphrey family because there were no other pubs in the Smeaton area.
“We bought the pub to bring some life to the region,” she said.
“Running the pub is a good lifestyle and we have a very good community around us.”
PRATTY’S PATCH, MAIDEN GULLY
Price guide: $3.5 million
Pratty’s Patch has been in the hands of a family operation for more than 15 years, but the door is now open for a new face.
A pair of brothers and their wives have run Pratty’s Patch, a venue with a public bar, dining space for 180, two outdoor beer gardens, grassed areas and commercial kitchen.
The hotel is set in a redeveloped 1860s private home on the outskirts of Bendigo.
THE AMERICAN CRESWICK, CRESWICK
Price guide: $3 million-plus freehold going concern or $475,000 lease
On the outskirts of Ballarat, the American Creswick at Creswick has more than 150 years of Goldfields history.
The current owners have been running the pub for the past 18 years, but are now retiring with the pub on the market for the first time in more than 20 years.
The venue has a wine bar, bistro, cafe and accommodation, with six bedrooms.
THOONA HOTEL, THOONA
Price guide: $625,000
Thoona is a one-pub town and now that pub is for sale as a freehold going concern.
The Thoona Hotel is located at the foot of the Warby Ranges and is a 30-minute drive from Yarrawonga, Wangaratta and Benalla.
The venue has been significantly refurbished recently, with a public bar, bistro and dining room, updated commercial kitchen, newly renovated beer garden and three-bedroom family residence up for grabs.
ROBIN HOOD INN, DROUIN WEST
Price guide: $2.3 million
With a history dating back to the 1870s, West Gippsland hotel and pub the Robin Hood Inn is now for sale.
The historic hotel itself is only for sale with a long lease in place with a tenant contracted.
The Robin Hood Inn features a public bar, two bistro rooms, bottle shop, brand new commercial kitchen plus a general store.
There is also a motel consisting of 10 rooms.
IMPERIAL HOTEL, BAIRNSDALE
Price guide: $500,000 (freehold)
The Imperial Hotel in Bairnsdale has sat idle for the past five or so years, but it is now on the market for about half a million dollars.
The venue includes a public bar, pool room, bistro and private function room and large rear
deck.
GREENDALE COUNTRY PUB, GREENDALE
Price guide: offers more than $1 million
The Greendale Country Pub, the only hotel and general store in the small town near Ballan, is on the market for offers of at least seven-figures.
The venue currently has a contracted tenant running the public bar with a separate dining area, large beer garden with its own stage and private function area, general store that provides groceries, a bottle shop and takeaway pizza.
