Renewables: Farmer Andrew Paterson in VCAT opposing solar farm on neighbouring property
A Gippsland farmer is heading to VCAT to take on a massive solar farm plan near his historic property, but it’s an option that is soon to be removed for those in the same boat.
Maffra’s Andrew Paterson is at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal this week opposing a solar farm proposal that would border his historic property on three sides.
Plans by an Irish-based company, BNRG Leeson, for almost 10,000 solar panels on 15ha of leased land on the Maffra-Briagolong Road were lodged in 2022.
But the option open to Mr Paterson to head to VCAT will be denied in future cases after sudden and far-reaching changes to accelerate approvals were made last week by the state government.
“VCAT is an expensive, stressful and time-consuming process,” Mr Paterson said.
“But it is the only avenue open to us to object.
“Our aim is that the tribunal will uphold our request not to have the permit issued and the land protected and able to be productive and irrigated farmland.”
Another element to the objection has been mounted on cultural heritage grounds with the area being a known home to registered and significant Gunaikurnai grinding stones.
In addition to farming, the Paterson-owned land on the Boisdale Estate selected in 1841 also includes an 1890s heritage-listed homestead.
The family has plans for group accommodation, but fears those won’t be viable with solar panels “in clear view”.
“I am a believer and supporter of renewable solar and wind power, but not at the expense of
productive farmland and food production,” Mr Paterson said.
“There is no need to displace productive agricultural land to host solar.
“It’s simply shortsighted.
“The land is able to be irrigated from channel, ground and reuse water, therefore it can have enhanced productivity benefits for agriculture for our community.”
Wellington Shire backed the solar farm on the strict condition the company consulted with those who lived nearby.
The company’s website states: “The site meets all the requirements the Victorian government has for siting large-scale solar facilities”.
