A POOWONG abattoir has been fined by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria after an offensive “meaty” odour penetrated the homes of nearby residents.

GBP Australia Pty Ltd was fined $8261 for breaching licence conditions for an offensive odour that escaped the property.

EPA Gippsland regional manager Jessica Bandiera said residents lodged repeated reports regarding the smell, prompting an investigation.

Ms Bandiera said the odour was particularly problematic throughout the recent summer, with neighbours describing a “rancid/rotten smell” that drifted into homes.

“The transient nature of odour made it necessary to conduct a series of inspections,” Ms Bandiera said.

“Then in February, an inspection of the Gardner Lane premises at Poowong found odour was clearly present.”

EPA officers detected a strong odour with “rendering and meaty characteristics” near the property,” Ms Bandiera said, before the EPA issued a pollution abatement notice.

The abattoir is now required to develop a plan for prevention of offsite odour, which the company has complied with, according to the EPA.

A spokeswoman from GBP declined to comment at this time.
