Growing concerns for untapped mining profits

A Horsham man has been arrested after reports of fraudulently-prepared documents related to a mining project’s proposal.

A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed on Monday that a 54-year-old man was arrested, interviewed and released as part of an ongoing investigation.

“Horsham Crime Investigation Unit detectives executed a warrant at a residential home in Horsham on Wednesday 12 February as part of an ongoing investigation,” they said.

The spokesman said there were reports the documents were fraudulently prepared and submitted as part of a proposed mining project.

“As the investigation is ongoing it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment further at this time,” they said.

Minister Sonya Kilkenny filed her assessments for two mineral sands mining projects in the region in December, which could both proceed if they met listed requirements.

It came after widespread opposition from the region’s farmers, who voiced concerns about the planning process, consultation and agricultural impact.

A Victorian government spokesman said the investigation was a matter for the police.
