Farmer’s Daughters: Gippsland produce on show at new Melbourne restaurant
A new three-storey Melbourne restaurant will be home to some of Gippsland’s best produce and the owner hopes it will boost the profile of more Victorian farmers.
GIPPSLAND produce will be front and centre at a new three-storey restaurant in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.
Owner Alejandro Saravia said it was important to bring the country to the city because many people don’t know the calibre of the food in the country.
“I hope it will encourage more awareness of what regional Victoria and their people have to offer,” he said.
Farmer’s Daughters, will open on January 28 and will feature an open kitchen, gourmet deli and retail pantry on the ground floor, as well as a formal restaurant and rooftop bar.
Mr Saravia said he wanted to showcase all that Gippsland had to offer throughout the restaurant, with reclaimed timber from the area used in the furniture as well as local food and beverages “because they are the best.”
“Gippsland provides an amazing variety of ingredients from all different microclimates - from vegetables to grass fed beef, to a great mix of fish and seafood.”
Working alongside farmers such as David Batarilo from Alpine Trout Farm is how Mr Saravia became interested in sharing the stories of the region, and was even appointed the Official Food & Beverage Ambassador for Gippsland, but didn’t exactly plan on opening a restaurant.
“Farmer’s Daughters was never meant to be a restaurant, it started as a way for me to communicate directly to the farmers that I was working with to learn more from them,” he said.
Mr Saravia said he also has some other grand plans back in Gippsland, beyond the launch of the restaurant.
“We would like to establish a research farm and food production farm/kitchen in Gippsland so we can be more in touch with the land and the people,” he said.
