Country footy wrap: Carlton forward Jed Lamb at White Hills, Cody Szust at Wodonga

A former AFL forward dominated with 13 goals, but it wasn’t even the best haul in regional footy this weekend.

Former Carlton forward Jed Lamb underlined his status as one of the Heathcote District Football League’s best forwards with a stunning display on Saturday.

The 28-year-old, who also played for GWS and Sydney in his 66-game AFL career, booted 13 majors to lead White Hills to a resounding 98-point victory against Heathcote.

Lamb first played for Hills back in 2019 where he kicked 55 goals from 12 games to finish equal-second in the goalkicking charts behind Mount Pleasant’s Ben Weightman who fell narrowly short of a century of goals.

In the first four games of the season, Lamb has 24 goals to his name despite going goalless in round one against Elmore.

He also booted a bag of eight against Leitchville-Gunbower a fortnight ago.

Hills, who are coached by Lamb’s former Carlton teammate Sam Kerridge, are one of the premiership fancies in the competition alongside Lockington Bamawm United, who had their own monster win at the weekend.

Wodonga recruit highlights his ability

Carrying a significant footballing resume, there has been plenty of pressure on Cody Szust to perform in the Ovens and Murray Football League.

On Saturday, the former Norwood player delivered his best performance of the season so far with 10 goals as Wodonga got the better of North Albury by 168 points.

Ethan Redcliffe wasn’t to be outdone however as he booted eight of his own.

It was an exciting weekend in one of Victoria’s premier competitions with Corowa Rutherglen, Wodonga Raiders and Yarrawonga all recording upset wins.

Meanwhile, Albury maintained its unbeaten start to the year with a 12-point victory over Wangaratta.

A monster return gets better

Cudgewa couldn’t be happier to have Kylin Morey back at the club and it’s easy to understand why.

On Saturday, Morey booted 20 goals as the Upper Murray Football League fancies smacked Federal to the tune of 251 points.

His performance backed up a nine-goal outing in round one.

Eight-goal haul … as a resting forward

Former Southport Sharks NEAFL premiership player Wade Hancock had a day out as playing coach for Wentworth in the Sunraysia league.

The Roos took a trip down to Underbool to face Ouyen United, known as the Kangas, but Hancock was limited to forward 50 duties only because of a sore hamstring.

Ultimately, it proved a pretty good spot to be, as he got on the end of eight goals and the visitors prevailed in a nailbiter by one point.

It was the Roos’ second win of the season and a real confidence-booster, given former AFL players Mark Jamar and Dallas Willsmore were lining up for the opposition.

A second bag of 10 for the season

Moyston Willaura’s Zach Louder is giving Mininera and District Football League defenders nightmares.

On Saturday, Louder booted 10 goals for the second time this year as his side recorded a 165-point win over Caramut.

Carisbrook forward loads up

Anthony Zelencich has been in devastating form to start the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League season for Carisbrook with 26 goals from three games.

On Saturday, he produced his best performance of the season yet with a bag of 11 in a 104-point victory against Newstead.

Zelencich’s double figure effort came after bags of seven and eight in the Redbacks’ opening two matches.

Two double figure bags in one game

Apollo Bay were far too good for the Western Eagles in the Colac and District Football League in a massive 125-point win with two players kicking 11 goals apiece.

Damien Zaparenkov and Dion Lawson filled their boots as the Hawks recorded their second win of the season.

Thirteen of the best

Tye O’Connell had a day out in the South West District Football League on Saturday as he kicked 13 goals.

The Tyrendarra star was in fine form as his side ran out 213-point winners against Heathmere.

Another bag in the Kyabram District Football League

Forwards have been making the most of their opportunities in front of goal this season in northern Victoria and on Saturday it was Lancaster’s Zach Cerrone’s turn.

Cerrone booted 10 as Lancaster made it four wins from four with a 217-point thumping of Longwood.

Russells Creek forward’s big day out

Jyran Chatfield arguably couldn’t have played any better for Russells Creek against Old Collegians.

Chatfield had his eye in throughout the afternoon as he finished with 10.
