Police investigating alleged sexual assault on Tiwi Islands

Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to an alleged sexual assault that occurred Sunday afternoon on the Tiwi Islands.

July 6 7.43pm: Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to an alleged sexual assault that occurred Sunday afternoon on the Tiwi Islands.

Police said that at about 12:40pm, they received reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted by a male who was unknown to her in Wurrumiyanga.

Investigations are ongoing to locate the alleged offender and determine the circumstances of the incident.

Detectives from the Sex Crime Unit have deployed to Wurrumiyanga to continue investigations.

Police are calling for any witnesses who may have information that can assist police in their inquiries to make contact on 131 444 or to visit your local police station.

July 6, 7am: A man is in hospital after he was hit-and-run outside Monsoons on Sunday morning.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Langdon said the man was struck by a blue Toyota Hilux outside the popular nightclub along Mitchell St at 12.30am.

The driver sped off and failed to stop, with police still searching for the vehicle and offender.

The victim was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.

Commander Langdon said investigations are still ongoing, but police believe this was a random strike.

Police have appealed to anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage of the incident or the vehicle leaving Hilux leaving Mitchell St to contact Crime Stopper on 1800 333 000 or 131 444.

The reference number given to this masthead is a SEPRO number ending in 68451.

150L of alcohol seized by police along Roper Hwy

July 6, 7am: NT Police seized 150L of alcohol bound for remote communities along the Roper Hwy on Saturday.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Langdon said the seizure was part of a road campaign targeting drugs and alcohol police allege would be smuggled into restricted areas.

“Unfortunately people are still trying to smuggle alcohol into those restricted areas,” Commander Langdon said.

“Alcohol in restricted areas can lead to antisocial behaviour and violent crime — it’s disappointing people are still ignoring the rules.”

Commander Langdon said police from Katherine’s Northern Traffic Unit and general duties officers from Numbulwar and Ngukurr pulled over 14 vehicles during the campaign.

Two drivers were arrested and two more were issued with notices to appear at court, Commander Langdon said.

Man turns himself in over alleged hit-and-run

July 5, 10.30am: A man has handed himself in to police a week after an alleged hit and run in Darwin.

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 43-year-old man after he came forward over the incident in Leanyer on June 27.

It was alleged a white Holden Commodore station wagon struck a man and a woman unloading groceries from their car parked on Leanyer Drive.

The woman suffered serious injuries, while the man escaped with minor injuries.

The station wagon was seized and the alleged offender was expected to be charged with a number of offences on Friday evening.

Ammunition stolen from Top End government building

July 5, 3am: Police are investigating illegal entries into two government buildings overnight in Katherine East on Saturday.

At about 3am police received a report that multiple intruder alarms had activated at the Parks and Wildlife building on Giles Street.

A police search of the premises upon arrival indicated the building had been unlawfully entered, with attempts made to remove a number of items before police attended the scene.

Additional investigations revealed an armoury at the building had been unlawfully entered by unknown offenders.

Inside the armoury, the offenders allegedly stole an amount of ammunition but no firearms were removed.

The Northern Territory Emergency Services building next door had also been broken into, with offenders unsuccessfully trying to secure rescue equipment.

Watch Commander acting senior sergeant Steve Langdon said tools had been taken to the scene in preparation to force entry, but that it appeared the intruders fled when the alarms activated.

“They appeared to be looking for items they could steal like generators or other power tools that would be kept on a premises like that,” he said.

“Our crime scene examiners are on the scene now and we’ll go through looking for any forensic evidence we can get to identify the offenders. We believe our arrival disturbed them.”

Emergency services respond to crash in the northern suburbs

July 4, 5.50pm: Emergency services are responding to a crash in which a car flipped on its side trapping people inside.

A car has crashed and flipped on its side near the McMillans Road turn off to Sabine Road in Millner about 5.40pm on Friday.

A witness said they saw cars strewn across the street as people got out of their vehicles to help the people caught inside the overturned car.

Emergency services were not at the scene at the time but had been called and notified as shown on the NT incident map.

It is currently unknown what condition those in the crash are in.

Officers set upon in Malak house raid

July 4, 3pm: An officer was treated in hospital and three people arrested following an incident in Malak while officers were attending an unrelated incident.

At about 6.30pm, Casuarina General Duties police attended a residence in Malak as part of an ongoing investigation when they began questioning a group assembled at the home and removing drug paraphernalia.

A 16-year-old male allegedly attempted to regain possession of the drug paraphernalia and arrested after he ignored police directions, resisted arrest and bit an officer.

A 48-year-old male and 55-year-old female from the group then allegedly assaulted the attending police while they were arresting the teenager. ‘

Extra officers attended the scene and the three alleged offenders were detained.

The male youth was later charged with two counts of assault police, resist police and furnish a false name to a police officer, while the adult male and female were both charged with assaulting police.

All three offenders were scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday.

Police command condemned the incident. Acting Senior Sergeant Christopher Humphries said officers should be able to attend their jobs without risk of being assaulted.

“No one deserves to be assaulted in their line of work no matter the job,” Senior Sergeant Humphries said.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated, and police will arrest those who choose to put the safety of our officers at risk.”

Search for station wagon after woman seriously injured in hit and run

July 3, 4pm: Northern Territory Police are continuing to call for information after a woman was seriously injured in a hit and run last week.

Just after 7pm on Friday, June 27, emergency services received reports of a hit and run along Leanyer Drive, Leanyer, where a man and a woman had been allegedly struck with a car.

Police initially called for information relating to any witnesses of a white Yaris or Getz hatchback, however investigators now believe it was a white Holden Commodore VE Calais SS Station Wagon.

The white station wagon is believed to be missing the passenger side mirror and may have damage on the left side of the vehicle following the incident.

Police are encouraging the driver, and anyone who may have witnessed this car within the vicinity of Leanyer Drive at the time of this incident – particularly anyone with dashcam footage – to make contact on 131 444, quoting reference number NTP2500065618.

Two people injured after car towing caravan flips on Arnhem Highway

July 3, 11.30am: Two people were injured after a car towing a caravan flipped on the Arnhem Highway.

NT Police said that at 10.15am emergency services received reports that a car towing a caravan had crashed near the Lambells Lagoon turn-off, 55km southeast of Darwin.

Two people were in the car that crashed, who received minor injuries.

One inbound lane of the Arnhem Highway remained blocked at 11.45am, with traffic being directed through the second lane.

Traffic delays were expected until about 12.30pm while the caravan was removed.

Public intervenes as man allegedly assaults partner at Top End taxi rank

July 3, 11am: NT Police have arrested a man who allegedly attacked his partner at a Katherine taxi rank before running off when members of the public tried to stop him.

The 23-year-old man is alleged to have attacked his partner at the Katherine Oasis Taxi rank about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Police allege he attacked the woman on two occasions before members of the public intervened, he then allegedly became aggressive towards those individuals before fleeing on foot.

Police and St John Ambulance attended and took the female victim to Katherine Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for assessment.

The alleged offender was later found by police hiding in the garden of a family member’s home in Katherine North.

He was arrested and has since been charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endanger causing serious harm and will face court on July 7.

Superintendent Warren Scott commended the actions of the public for intervening and providing a detailed description of the alleged offender.

“It is because of their quick actions that the victim received the help she needed, and police were able to quickly locate the offender,” Mr Scott said.

“You can also anonymously report through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
