BREAKING: Police assaulted as remote riots force childcare centre into lockdown
May 24, 7am: Territory Response Group officers have been flown to Wadeye following a “disturbance” overnight at the remote Daly region community, about 400km west of Darwin.
Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankine said that at about 4.15pm on Friday, a “mass disturbance” of residents erupted in the community, forcing the childcare centre into lockdown.
As officers left the police station to respond, they were allegedly approached by a group of approximately 30 people armed with bows and arrows, rebars and window louvres.
Police allege two unknown males threw rebars at the police vehicle, one piercing the windscreen and another lodging in the bonnet.
Officers disengaged and returned to the police station, where the group allegedly began throwing projectiles at the building and rioting outside.
No officers were physically injured during the incident.
Six members of the Territory Response Group were flown into the town to assist, and the crowd later dispersed.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police engaging with community elders, local family groups and clinic staff to prevent further violence.
It’s unclear whether the latest unrest is related to an incident that occurred in Wadeye this week, when a gang of youths armed with machetes and planks of wood terrorised five workers leaving an animal management clinic at the community last Tuesday.
Police said one of the offenders opened the driver’s side door, threatened the driver with a machete and demanded the keys to the vehicle. The driver handed over the eys and fled the vehicle.
The offenders fled the scene when a group of construction workers who observed the assault arrived to provide assistance. Those offenders remain outstanding pending further investigations.
