The Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass is set to be fully complete and operational from Wednesday, months after it was originally tipped to be finished.
The $165 million project, which was jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory government, was initially expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
In a statement, Louise McCormick, the chief executive of the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure, said the project would improve road safety outcomes, reduce traffic delays during peak hours and increase traffic flow for freight connectivity.
Almost 20,000 motorists travel on Tiger Brennan daily, according to the statement.
“By enabling faster and more reliable travel, the project fosters economic connectivity, particularly for industries reliant on efficient freight routes to the East Arm Wharf,” she said.
“For residents, reduced congestion during peak hours translates to valuable time savings and increased convenience, as well as a safer route to and from work.
“As a key connector between the Darwin CBD and Palmerston, careful consideration was given to minimise impacts on road users while the overpass was constructed.
“We thank the public and local businesses for their patience during the construction phase.”
Traffic can now flow in all directions with the new overpass carrying Berrimah Road traffic over Tiger Brennan Drive.
To date, more than 242 local businesses have been involved in the project with more than 1710 workers involved, including 191 Indigenous workers and 48 apprentices and trainees.
Sitzler director Michael Sitzler said “safety and quality” were a “prime focus” in the delivery of the overpass.
“We’re very proud of the project teams’ diligent focus on the delivery of construction excellence and the collaboration between local businesses that have made this transformational infrastructure project possible,” he said.
“We look forward to the ongoing benefits it will bring to the community for decades to come.”
Remaining project works are anticipated to be completed by May (weather permitting), including the shared user paths, final landscaping and an emergency services access into the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex.
