AGRICULTURE is one of the most popular subjects at Finley High School in NSW.

The school runs its own Shorthorn stud, with 10 students making the trip down to the Royal Melbourne Show to show their bulls, cows and heifers.

Year eight students Georgia Webb, Sarah Cameron and Hayley Doohan from the school said this was their second time at the show.

Hayley said her parents ran a sheep and cropping enterprise and she enjoyed working with the Shorthorn cattle.

“In the lead-up to the show we wash and handle the cattle we are showing and we also get the opportunity to teach the year seven students about how to best care for the stud,” Hayley said.

“It’s also great for kids who live in town and aren’t growing up on a farm.

“The Agplot at school is really popular with those students.

“I’ve decided I want to work as a vet when I finish school because I really enjoy working with animals.”

This year the Finley High School students brought down two cows and calves, two heifers and a bull to parade in the show ring.

Sarah Cameron said agriculture at school was opening up doors for the students involved.

“We can learn about agriculture right up until year 12 and there are some great opportunities involved with that,” Sarah said.

“One of the year 12 students regular attends the Finley saleyards learning about that side of agriculture, and so there’s primary industries work experience available to us.”
