Yasmin El-Masri sentenced for assisting drug dealer husband Truc-Hung Tran by hiding cannabis
A young mother has avoided jail for trying to protect her drug dealer husband from legal consequences by hiding evidence from his enterprise.
A young mother has avoided jail for her “misguided” attempt to protect her drug dealer husband from legal consequences.
Yasmin El-Masri, 27, was caught on CCTV trying to hide evidence of Truc-Hung Tran’s cannabis enterprise after he was busted in a traffic stop.
During sentencing, the District Court heard police stopped El-Masri’s husband, Tran on December 27, 2023 at Port Adelaide.
Licence checks revealed Tran was disqualified from driving.
The court heard police found $43,000 in a bag and a strong odour of cannabis while examining the vehicle.
Tran called El-Masri who arrived at the traffic stop before leaving a short time later.
Police then attended the couple’s home at Paralowie and found a Coles shopping bag containing cannabis weighing 381g and 392g in a vehicle.
“Wrapped in a black jumper nearby was a set of digital scales and a heat sealer,” Judge Anthony Allen said.
Police then found two heat-sealed bags of cannabis weighing 107g and 478g in the main bedroom, as well as an electronic money counter, which El-Masri was not charged with.
The court heard CCTV showed El-Masri carrying a Coles shopping bag and black jumper to the car.
“You acted as an assistant for your co-offender and on his instructions removed the cannabis from inside your home in a misguided attempt to protect your family from legal consequences,” Judge Anthony Allen said.
El-Masri pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.
Tran, 27, has also pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and will face sentencing submissions next month.
The court heard El-Masri was caring for the couple’s three children while was in custody in Western Australia.
El-Masri was sentenced to one year and four months jail, with a non-parole period of eight months.
“The offence of trafficking in a controlled drug is a serious offence,” Judge Allen said.
“Great social harm is caused by illicit drugs and their proliferation throughout our community.”
However, due to El-Masri caring for her children and minor role in the offending, the sentence was suspended on a $500, 12 month good behaviour bond.
“If you do breach the bond and you are sent to prison you know the consequences that will have on your three young kids, so do the right thing,” Judge Allen said.
