Shots fired, property trashed in ‘staggering’ home invasion bid

Police are investigating after several shots were fired and a suburban home and a car were smashed up during a wild disturbance on Wednesday night.

Police are investigating a shooting and vandalism rampage during a wild disturbance at Woodville Gardens on Wednesday night.

Police understood three males had tried to gain entry to the house about 11.30pm by “smashing windows” before discharging a firearm, said officer-in-charge of western district, Joanne Sharman.

Ms Sharman said the attempted home invaders were stopped by a dog.

“It is believed that during this incident (break in attempt), the occupant’s dog has chased the male persons south on Hookings Tce,” she said.

“It’s believed that one of the male persons has discharged a firearm in the direction of the dog before continuing south.”

Ms Sharman said the occupants of the home and the dog were not injured as a result of any fired shots.

Police found a number of bullet casings on the road and identified a bullet hole in a vehicle parked on the street.

They are also investigating if another bullet hole found nearby – at the Port Adelaide Cycling Club toilet block – is related to the overnight incident.

Meanwhile, the suspects fled in two different cars – a silver Holden Astra and a black SUV.

Ms Sharman said their investigation was in its infancy but police understood it was not a random attack and the people involved were known to each other.

But the motive for the home invasion was unknown.

Police had also previously attended the house involved in the incident but said those attendances were unrelated to the shooting.

Ms Sharman conceded that any time shots were fired in the streets, it was a “significant” safety concern.

“The recklessness of these people involved in this incident is absolutely staggering,” she said. “When firearms are discharged in this manner... projectiles can continue over a vast distance, placing the public in danger.”

It comes just a week after shots were fired at a home in one of Adelaide’s affluent eastern suburbs.

A spray of bullets was launched at the two-storey property at Elinor Tce in Glen Osmond on February 6, with fragments of glass seen on the roof of a Mercedes vehicle parked in the driveway.
