A mother and her child have escaped a terrifying carjacking attempt thanks to the help of an unlikely hero.

The woman was attacked with an aerosol spray by a screwdriver wielding man on Monday afternoon in a parking area on Peachey Road at Munno Para.

He proceeded to try and drag her out of the driver’s seat of her white Land Rover while her toddler watched on from the back.

CCTV obtained by 9News showed a good Samaritan, who was revealed to be a convicted killer, nearby intervening before the car could be stolen and chasing the attacker away.

He was also sprayed in the process.

Police said no one had been arrested and the attacker was last seen wearing a light-coloured T-shirt, dark coloured shorts, a baseball cap and sunglasses and running north along Peachey Road.
