Wade Burns elected for a second term as police union president

Inspector Wade Burns has been overwhelmingly re-elected president of the Police Association of South Australia and his newly appointed deputy has been outspoken about the leadership.

Inspector Wade Burns has been re-elected as president of the Police Association of South Australia in a landslide victory over a highly-regarded veteran detective.

The Australian Electoral Commission results showed Mr Burns received nearly 70 per cent of the votes ahead of Detective Senior Sergeant First Class Trevor Rea.

The role of deputy president was more closely fought with Christopher Walkley triumphant in his challenge of incumbent Daryl Mundy by just 73 votes.

Mr Walkley has previously been critical of the PASA’s leadership labelling them “The Click” and was critical of it expelling past members for speaking out against the hierarchy.

Mr Burns said he was “incredibly grateful” to have such overwhelming support ahead of his second year in the position.

“I think that support is a strong reflection of the wins the Police Association has been able to achieve in recent times and the direction in which we’re heading,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with the new committee and continuing that momentum.”

It was revealed last month, SA Police had reopened an investigation into Mr Burns following allegations aired in parliament of indecent assault at an Adelaide nightclub in 2017.

The matter was closed and no further action was taken.

The AEC election figures showed less than half of the 4475 eligible members participated in the election.
