Trevor Atkinson, 63, remembered by colleague after death at Olympic Dam
The man who died at the Olympic Dam copper mine has been named as his colleagues rally to support his family.
Colleagues have paid tribute to 63-year-old Trevor Atkinson, who has been identified as the man who died at the Olympic Dam copper-gold mine last month.
Police and emergency services were called to Olympic Dam on May 23 after Mr Atkinson suffered a sudden medical episode and died, forcing a halt to operations throughout the day.
At the time, a spokesperson for BHP confirmed Mr Atkinson’s death, which is not considered a work-related matter.
General Manager for MPS Group Jason Carstairs, who has since created a GoFundMe for Mr Atkinson’s family, said his colleagues were heartbroken.
“Our MPS community suffered an unimaginable loss. Trevor Atkinson, a dedicated MPS worker, experienced a sudden and tragic medical event while at work,” he wrote.
“As his loved ones navigate the heartbreak of his unexpected passing, we are asking for your support to ease the burden.
“The funds raised will go directly to Trevor’s family to help with immediate needs, including feed and care for their horses and to provide practical assistance as they begin to heal from this tragedy.”
He said the money would go directly to his family and to help feed Trevor’s beloved animals.
The GoFundMe has so far raised more than $7000 towards the $14000 target.
The family’s death notice for Mr Atkinson said he was a “much-loved” husband of Karen and devoted father of Wesley, Jaydon, father in-law of Jess and grandfather of Parker.
A memorial service will be held for him in Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula later this month.
