Troy Andrew Williams jailed for over eight years for grooming a 15-year-old boy online and sexually abusing him
A dating app predator has been hit with a hefty jail term after he showed “superficial remorse” for sexually abusing a boy multiple times, including in a park.
A former scout group leader is behind bars again for preying on a boy he met on a dating site before sexually abusing him.
Troy Andrew Williams, 50, was jailed for more than eight years with a psychologist determining he had only expressed superficial remorse for his vile acts.
During sentencing, the District Court heard Williams met the 15-year-old victim on an adult male dating site at the end of 2022.
They began communicating over Snapchat, where the victim told Williams his age.
Sent sexually explicit images and videos over two months before meeting in person.
The court heard they met on multiple occasions, including at a park and the victim’s house, where Williams sexually abused him.
Judge Paul Muscat said he was satisfied Williams’ offending would have continued if the victim’s father hadn’t discovered the messages on his son’s phone, before reporting it to police.
Williams pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including procuring a child to engage in sexual activity and unlawful sexual intercourse.
The court heard Williams was jailed in 2015 for other child sex offending, relating to a 16-year-old boy he also met on a dating site.
“As a result of that offending you lost your position as a pool attendant and groundskeeper at a private school, as well as having to resign your position as a volunteer scout group leader,” Judge Muscat said.
The court heard a psychologist determined Williams did not meet the diagnostic criteria for a pedophilic disorder but was at a moderately high risk of reoffending because he hadn’t yet engaged in a child sex offender treatment program.
“(The psychologist) was also of the opinion that you have only expressed superficial remorse and victim empathy and that you have a very limited understanding of the exact nature of the emotional harm that your behaviour and actions have caused (the victim),” Judge Muscat said.
Williams was sentenced to eight years and six months jail, with a non-parole period of six years and 10 months.
“The sexual exploitation of children and the lasting effects upon them resulting from their abuse cannot be understated,” Judge Muscat said. “Your offending was not a mere momentary lapse of judgment on your part.
“You had opportunities to reflect on what you were doing and the age disparity between the two of you after each sexual encounter with (the victim) but you chose to continue with what you were doing.”
The sentence was backdated to September 1, 2023.
