SA Police release images of two cars, in an appeal for witnesses to CBD pedestrian death
SA Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 65-year-old man was fatally hit by a car in the CBD on Sunday.
South Australia Police have released images and are looking to speak to the drivers of two cars seen in Adelaide’s CBD, after a pedestrian was hit and killed on Sunday night.
Police said the cars are not believed to be involved in the collision, but are appealing to the drivers to come forward, and anyone else who may have witnessed the incident.
A 61-year-old man has since been charged with causing death by careless driving, after a 65-year-old Adelaide man was struck and killed at the scene.
Emergency services were called to the corner of Wakefield and Frome streets, in the city’s east, just after 9:30pm following reports that two cars had hit a pedestrian.
Police say the pedestrian was crossing Wakefield St when a Nissan four-wheel drive struck him before a second vehicle, a Mazda station wagon, also hit the victim.
Following the initial collision between the Nissan utility and the pedestrian, a dark sedan with a spoiler on the rear and a white SUV were seen in CCTV footage, passing through the collision scene in a westerly direction.
The driver of the Nissan, a 61-year-old Mitchell Park man, was arrested by Major Crash officers and charged with causing death by careless driving.
The man was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on June 18.
The driver of the Mazda, a 20-year-old Hillcrest man, is assisting police with their inquiries.
Police interviewed more than a dozen witnesses including other motorists, who declined to speak at the scene.
One local reported hearing loud screams.
Wakefield St, which is considered one of the CBD’s main thoroughfares, was shut while officers investigated the scene overnight.
Rob, a resident on Wakefield St, said he saw several fire trucks and police cars at the intersection of Frome St on Sunday night.
“My wife and I could see out our upstairs window that they were giving the guy CPR,” he said.
“You knew which were the cars that hit him because they were the odd ones out.”
Major crash investigators attended the scene about 9.30am on Monday, 12 hours after the crash, to speak to nearby businesses and residents.
The thoroughfare returned to its busy state on Monday morning, with little remnant of the horror crash less than 12 hours earlier.
Police tape was still hanging from nearby poles and paint marks along the stretch of Wakefield St in front of Century 21, on the southern side of the road, showed where investigators had been on scene.
The pedestrian’s death is the 23rd life lost on South Australian roads so far this year.
